Adjective Remix
Adjective Remix targets practicing vocabulary knowledge of qualifying words (aka adjectives). Vocabulary building is valuable for many young children with developmental delays and language disorders (Kuster, 2011). Categories Learning Center
Categories Learning Center is a multi-level, multi-player application designed by Speech-Language Pathologists to improve language comprehension for individuals of all age groups. Categories Learning Center is based on research surrounding language development and language processing in children; however, categorization skills may prove useful for individuals of all ages with word finding, memory, and reading comprehension difficulties.
The ability to identify and categorize an object by associating common features is critical for building the semantic networks needed for reading comprehension (Partyka & Kresheck, 1983). Poor categorization skills can influence word finding, comprehension, and language processing. Children with language disorders often have difficulty explaining a relationship between items, forming word associations, and building the semantic networks needed for speaking and writing (Semel, Wiig, & Secord, 2003).

- Make text-based labels. How to play
With each turn, a narrator describes what is happening in the picture (e.g., “He is wearing his shoes on his hands.”). The student then selects the “silly” or “not silly” image. If the correct image is tapped, the child is congratulated. If the “silly” image is tapped correctly, the app automatically moves forward to the expressive feature and the child is asked what makes the picture silly. The adult working with the child then makes the judgment on if the child’s answer was “correct,” “almost correct,” or “not correct.” The correct/incorrect responses are marked by tapping on one of three flowers placed discretely in each scene. This App, produced by AbleLink Technologies, Inc. in conjunction with the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities at the University of Kansas, provides self-paced videos to enable people with developmental disabilities to learn more about planning meetings. Eight sections cover topics such as Choice Making, Decision Making, Goal Setting, Community Living, Employment, Fun & Leisure, and Communication Skills. Narration, a written outline, and colorful graphics support people to understand more about self-determination and how to become engaged in their planning meetings.
This App can be used with one or more people to explain how one can plan for the future through self-determination. Screens can be switched by swiping pages to left or right with three fingers. The first screen is the "Text" mode, where an obtained result is read as a normal continuous text. The second screen is the "Blocks" mode, where text blocks in an image can be located by touching it. The third screen, the "Settings", is for changing the settings of capturing and recognition.
There are five items in the settings. The "Camera Flash" specifies whether the flash is turned on during capturing. The "Capture Mode" has three options. In the "Manual" capture mode, an image is captured when the shutter button is pressed. In the "Automatic" capture mode, an image is captured when the camera is stable and the focus is set. In the "Continuous" capture mode, all texts that appeared during capturing are recognized. The "Navigation Mode" specifies the way of navigation provided during capturing. With the "Beep" navigation, the App beeps when it detects a letter-like object. When more letters are detected, the beep gets more frequent. When letters are concentrated at the center, it beeps with a higher pitch. With the "Real-time Speech" navigation, a detected text is immediately spoken with vibration. When the "Save Images" is on, a captured image are saved in the "iYomube" folder. The "Recognition Language" specifies the language for which character recognition is performed.
